The Year of the Trilogy

In the beginning of this year it’s been pretty quiet so far gaming-wise. However, if the rumours are to be believed, there is a lot of good content to splurge on at the end of 2011. Read on to find out what I’m buying this year.

For me, this year will be one of the best so far for the newest generation of consoles and most likely one of the last before it’s (hopefully) updated. I’m going to go through in my personal order of preference for these three parters and let me know what you’re looking forward to in the comments.

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception

Now I don’t know a lot about this game and I don’t own a PS3 but boy would I buy one for what I’ve seen so far about this game. Multiplayer details are slowly being leaked and community feedback and interest is spiking right now. I’m tempted to dip my toes in the water for this game alone, because this PS3 exclusive looks set to be a game changer this year. not only do the graphics look top-notch, but from what I’ve heard the story will be top notch stuff. Hopefully Naughty Dog pulls it off, or it’ll be back to (original) Crash Bandicoot days, but after all, that’s not such a bad thing, right?

The promo shot for Uncharted 3; so far, so good.

Gears of War 3

I’ve seen a bit of footage for this game and played the series before, but this game looks set to blow the last two out of the water. I have a beta code coming next week for pre-ordering and I can’t wait to get back into this third person shooter. It looks like it’ll have a lot of developer input and polishing will be set to maximum with the games release being put back 6 months. Plus it’s one of the goriest and most beautiful games out there. Epic always stress the Unreal Engine, and this time looks set to be no different. Hopefully the new dedicated servers will improve connections also, with that stressed as one of the main issues of Gears of War, and especially it’s sequel, Gears 2. I’ll let you all know about the beta soon.

Back behind the forces of COG, and ready to fight the Locust once more.

Battlefield 3

Here is a title that two months ago I wouldn’t have batted an eyelid at, but since experiencing the release of their 12 minute reveal trailer, I absolutely cannot wait for this game and the ultra realism fuelling it. The scales sit this at one end of the FPS genre and Call of Duty at the other, and they are set to be released at a very similar time. They have been interviewed claiming they are aiming for the top spot, and gunning for the Call of Duty crown, and that’s respectable and I like them more for it. I’m tempted to hold off a week for both and see whether they are really worth my money, or whether one will be better value than the other. I’ll decide who wins the crown this year with my wallet, and so will millions of others. Good luck EA, you’re going to need it.

The ultra-realistic Frostbite engine shown in all it's modern glory.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

This game hasn’t been officially announced, but we all know it’s coming. Of course I’m interested in the single player campaign and want to see how the story unravels. But everyone is excited for the multiplayer, and hoping that a newly formed Infinity Ward will find a harmony between the explosive fast pacing of Modern Warfare 2, and the balancing and finesse of the original. Already the forums are exploding with ideas and suggestions for the next blockbuster title, and the developers are expecting to announce something by the end of April. I personally hope for a combination of the community feedback response that made Black Ops successful and of the fun and immersive environment of the last Modern Warfare title. We know that this game will be one pretty sight, but it may not have a pretty ending. You heard it here first.

No intel has dropped on this one yet, but there's no doubting it'll be huge.

Assassin’s Creed III

I didn’t play Brotherhood, but I didn’t miss Assassins Creed II, and cannot wait to see how the story evolves from how the last game ended. I’m excited to see who’s shoes we are put into this time and hopefully the series is finished here and not dragged out to milk the collection. This campaign has one of the most engrossing story lines ever told in a game, with the perfect mix of time travel, science and crazy assassinations, that I love about stories and films (Back to the Future is awesome). You’re just a badass in the 16th Century. It also has some serious longevity: I’m still collecting all 100 of the feathers from the last game, and I like that, I have to come back for my beloved Gamer Score. This is my most looking forward to title of 2011.

The near perfect mix of bad-assery and time travel. And a cape.

So there we are, my top 5 for the ‘threes’ released in the back end of 2011. Hopefully I’m not disappointed, and expect a review to drop on every title I pick up. Again, let me know how you feel with a comment.
